Veiled. Interesting ironic title for an interesting part of the ongoing story of Alex Verus and friends.

If you have not read previous books there are spoilers here, if you have then I will reveal nothing that will spoil 'Veiled' for you.

Alex sees the future. His magic specialty is divination. Generally, mages find his talents and his specialty rather lame, his attitude arrogant, and his politics questionable. And since Alex was trained by a Dark Mage, he doesn't much bother with things like friends and trust. Well, not with humans anyhow.

Inch by inch, adventure by adventure, people try to do bad things to Alex. If there is anything that gets Alex riled up, it is people trying to do bad things to him, or his limited circle of associates.

Veiled is a bit misleading as a title here because Alex is getting pushed into the spotlight in each further adventure. By this book, he has a reputation with many of the powerful mages of the United Kingdom. The Light Mages have noted that Light mages die when they try to do bad things to Alex. The Dark Mages have noted pretty much the same thing. Even more puzzling, Alex is the exact opposite of a battle mage, so he should be dead many times over.

But as Alex comments in the story, "most people do not get defense".

This is a very good book, pushing Alex into a place he is NOT comfortable: working closely with authority. Alex decides that since the danger of more powerful enemies with unknown aims has gotten huge and seems to be pointed at him, he really needs to cultivate stronger allies that have leverage in the halls of power. This rankles Alex until his friends suggest Alex does have a Keeper contact in Caldera. And the Keepers actually enforce the Laws that hold the Light and Dark mages in line.

Veiled becomes a more apt title, as Alex gets probationary acceptance as a Keeper Auxiliary working for Caldera. He finds working for the Keepers just as hard as he expected. Alex has been a loner, and believes he prefers it. He rightly points out his powers work at their best when there are not other mages around to muck up the futures he can visualize and read.

Alex has trust issues.
The Keepers, of course, do not trust Alex much either.
Not exactly fun.

And not exactly guaranteed to move a story along. However, Alex does find out lots about current politics on the Council, how the Keepers are employed, how their mandate works, and even comes to understand the mind set and process of going to the 'good fight' day to day even when it does not seem to make a difference year to year.

And very slowly, that is where the dragging daily procedural flow of the book starts to shine. Alex has been pushed around, threatened, shot at, and nearly killed in previous books. Alex has stuck his neck out to save friends. But here, Alex is churning in place, almost trapped by his own choices, and the Veils are teasing aside, showing him things he never imagined about the politics and habits of mages.

It is not good. He doesn't like it. World weary folks around him tell him to 'grow up' as this is the real world.

There are many more hints of things to come in this book. And by the end, more things are still Veiled than are revealed.

For those readers who might be tempted to say this book does not push the world building and story far enough forward I would say you should read it again. For those who aren't keen on the 'talking heads' style of how much time Alex spends asking questions and getting answers he does not like... I'd say put yourself in Alex's place. Those questions needed to be asked.

Something very key happens to Alex in this book.
Things moving forward are going to be Very Different.

This seems to be more of a transitional novel than anything. The point seems to be to get Alex firmly ensconced in his role as a Keeper, and to finally find a good teacher for Luna's Chance magic talents. Anne and Variam are in a holding pattern, though Variam has definitely found his home with the militant wing of the Keepers. The balance of power on the Council is shifting in a way it hasn't in centuries, as a dark mage is appointed a seat for the first time in history.

Hoping for book six soon, now.
I will never not buy Alex Verus series titles, but this one had a bit too much explication re Council law and politics. And more battle scenes than I prefer despite their being very well wrought. What I enjoyed most was the great story-telling and how the characters developed just enough to stay interesting. Like the series overall, Veiled by Benedict Jacka is top notch Urban Fantasy even though a couple of its elements are not precisely to my taste. One of the best books I've read all year.
First I have to say I have very much enjoyed the Alex Verus series and have read them all up to this one. This one was a disappointment though. It was loaded with complicated politics and so many people that I found it hard to keep them all straight. I would have to stop and think who was each one as they came in and out of the story. This book was a fail for me. Guess I am done with the Alex Verus books.
I continue to read and enjoy these novels. However, they are rather chilly - I can't warm to he main character despite being heroic, clever, outsider status etc etc. Not quite sure why. However, I'll continue to read the series. Writing quality is good and plot lines excellent. This one wasn't the most enjoyable - some of the others were a strong 4 stars.
Or how I dabbled in mage politics and lived to tell the tale. For a while at least.

Entertainment wise, this is a five stars as clearly as the other books. Tore through it in two afternoons on the balcony. Action, suspense and a bit of London.

In terms of character development however, it tends towards 3 stars. Bit narrowed in scope and involvement, possibly setting up a lot of new names - but felt like temporary walk on parts.

Overall the world feels a bit grimmer, colder and ruthless than in previous installments of the series. More House of Cards, less Buffy. Which only leaves the question of when the next "episode" is out.
As with all of the Alex Verus books this one did not disappoint. That said... (warning - spoiler ahead)
Alex Verus is turning out to be significantly underpowered and spent several scenes sitting on the periphery or needing to call for help. It does make me wonder how he even manages to walk the streets without being wiped out by other overpowered mages. And even in this one none of the bad guys ended up being defeated. Not a pyrrhic victory because some good did eventuate. Still, I long for a return to the books where Alex kicked ass and won even if it was extremely hard fought. The way these mages are being set up however, makes Alex a very small pawn while he waits for everyone else to save him. Not how I wanted the story to go. Could the writer please find someway to give him some power so they can at least level the playing field.
First, this clearly appears to be the start of another story-arch. While I did enjoy the return of more than a few of this series favorites in Team Verus...they had little to no real major supporting role in this new story; which in my eyes made it somehow less enjoyable. As I indicated in the title, I had real trouble with some critical choices and decisions made in this book. The main character seemed just not as confident and appeared more pedestrian in his choices instead of the risk taker I've come to expect. This story could have been done or told just as easily without him being in it. Maybe it was my imagination, but some of the similarities to another literary fictional Mage "white council vs dark council" drama seemed too close for me and therefore fell a little flat.
