Engaging novel with lots of suspense. The author had obviously been in VN. Some implausibility like where can an aircrew find the time to take off and do private missions?? But the author captures the mystery and surreal atmosphere of the place well. The bar girl litany of "Hello, what your name? How long you stay VietNam? I love you too much. And lastly, I never forget you." was well employed. Standard corruption plots involving military and CIA front and center here are part of VN war popular culture. I don't usually read these VN novels, but this one was a change of pace from my usual reading fare, and entertaining.Tags : The Girl From Hanoi - Kindle edition by Tom Myers. The Girl From Hanoi edition by Tom Myers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Ended too soon. Want to know what happened to characters after novel ended.
I really enjoyed this book. Found it very easy to read, authentic characters and believable story. Just became a fan of Tom Myers.
This is a sure read for someone who enjoys a war thriller. Horror, action, suspense and entertainment is artistically blended.
Set around early Vietnam where everyone was a hustler, a story about just getting past the bull and surviving to get home. Enjoyed this story very much.
I was going to read only a sample of this novel before downloading it as I was already deep into another book. However, right off the bat I was hooked on this fast moving escapade of a story. Airman Austin Mars kept me enthralled in his intense, sometimes hilarious, mostly hair-raising adventures in Vietnam of the early 60's. Author Myers draws the reader into every scene and character with sensitive insight.
This story will linger with you long after you ( regretfully ) put it down. It has everything!
Very good storyline (and original as well), good character development and loads of twists and turns! This book has themes of war, romance, mystery and adventure and it all combines to a very good effect.
I think the description of that historical era is realistic and well fleshed out. If you're a fan of war/mystery/thriller, you will thoroughly enjoy this!
If you want your novels to be plausible this one is not for you.. Mr. Myers extends his literary license beyond believable and his characters and plot twists are as deep as a post-adolescent fantasy. The hero, Airman Mars, is capable of enticing all female contacts to drop their panties just by his mere presence. He is also able of becoming a kingpin of Asian drug trafficking within several weeks of his arrival, ingratiating himself into the Saigon branch of the Chinese triad and rectifying, with a vengeance, the bumblings of a deranged officer corp. Despite Saigon being a city of several million the author manages for a convenient character to be in the immediate neighborhood to rescue whomever is in distress. As a fantasy and entertainment the plot engages. I wanted more - real people, insights and believability.
