Bonnie's lived with her grandmother (Grandbag) most of her life. She's now living in an apartment with her mother (Maybelle). She wants to be happy with Maybelle, but knows that Grandbag will do everything in her power to sabotage that happiness. Grandbag is a bitter and controlling woman who must 'own' everything (people and things) that she sees.

When Bonnie (accompanied by the shadow boy) takes off in a midnight blue hot-air balloon she travels to a world 'beyond the sky' where she finds a land just like her own, but with some interesting differences. She is 'adopted' by a family (no questions asked) that is the family she's always yearned for. Her double (Arabella) and the mother (Maybelle) is complete with a dad and baby sister.

But the good is accompanied by the bad. Grandbag appears as Grandmother Marvel and she wants to possess Bonnie's parallel family. In order to save Arabella, Bonnie must find the courage to leave what she's always wanted and return home.

Will Bonnie find peace, happiness and family? Will her courage save Arabella and her family? Will Grandbag get her comeuppance? Is there a connection between Bonnie's world and Arabella's world?

Midnight Blue is a delightful tale of a young girl's quest for family and happiness. The fantasy element of an imperfect parallel world heightens the excitement and helps draw in the reader. And it offers up a delicious but subtle message of hope.

This is an award winning book, and rightly so because it is an eerily strange but also very powerful piece of writing. It is a book to make you think, but also one that some people will have mixed feelings about. It is not a story anyone would expect exactly, but it is a wonderful story about escape from abusive relationships, conflict resolution, self discovery and of the love of parents and children.

Even if I tried to describe this story I would fail. It is magical, imaginative and so unlike anything else I have written of late that it thoroughly deserves to be better noticed. But the lack of an easy to comprehend plot, and a down to earth conflict will challenge some readers. All I can say is that it really is worth the effort of reading it, so if you are intrigued - buy this book. If you are not intrigued, then at least borrow it from the library and give it a go.
What a pleasure it is to see the best of a former generation of children's novels being re-published electronically. Pauline Fisk's Midnight Blue was overall winner of the Smarties prize in 1990 and its limpidly beautiful language stands the test of time. Midnight Blue was Pauline Fisk's first novel and the winner of the Smarties Prize in 1990. I read it immediately after reading Blood Red Road by Moira Young a debut novel which won this year's Costa Children's award. So many points of comparison - a solitary heroine, a magic necklace, fear and friendship,choices to be made -- and such glaring contrasts in language and setting. The landscape of Blood Red Road is post-climate-change dystopian, the landscape of large sections of Midnight Blue is a grass-covered hill in Shropshire, softly undulating and sprinkled with folk-magic. For adults as well as children.
I am aware this book won an award, but I personally did not like it. I am not sure if I will use it in my classroom.

A great time travel piece. Fantasy abounds in this delightful tale.
I read that this was popular when the Harry Potter series started so I got it. It was fun to read and reminded me how it felt to read when I was young.(having gotten back into reading just the last few years) I really enjoyed it. Adventure, mystery etc. I'd recommend it to anyone that appreciates childrens stories.
