Wonderful story, I read the Stephen Garry translation. His translation seemed to read very easy, though not being a Russian speaker I can not speak for the accuracy of the translation. Several other reviewers mentioned poor reproductions but that was not the case for this edition. The author was a Soviet apparatchik, and wrote during the Stalin era so in general the Bolsheviks are on the correct side of history. However, he does go into a lot of the horrors of revolution including describing the emotional effect of the nightly murders perpetrated by a Bolshevik character. In general the story while detailing life for the cossacks in the early 20 th century, does present strong anti war themes, as most characters, at least in the lower or "grunt" level express remorse on their actions. I highly recommend this book, and for Russian writing it is a rather easy, though compelling read. As an aside it has rather short chapters which lends itself to short reading times.

No longer able to follow the old ways as their lives are interrupted by WWI, the Bolshevick revolution and the civil war the Cossack people must find ways to survive.
Well written, it is an exciting story with interesting characters. Very descriptive of the Cossack life, the land and towns where all things revolve around the river Don.
Spoiler alert often not a favorable view of the Cossack women.

Note You get what you pay for. Many people have been scammed by purchasing books offered for unbelievably low prices. They find that they receive poor photocopies made by a robot. Best to "pay the two dollars" and buy your books directly from the store, new, not a used book from some overseas dealer.
i read the sequel,The Don Flows Home to the Sea many years ago and loved it. It is great that these classics are still available at such a good price. It is amazing that Mikhail Sholokhov survived Communism
Originally published in 1934, this new edition of ‘And Quiet Flows the Don’ is a tough book to review. It is a classic of Soviet literature and one of the most poetic and image-laden books you can read in any language. In its day, it sold 10 million copies and Sholokhov received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1965 before his death in 1984. You can sympathize or criticize the politics and travails of the man’s attempts to be a writer in Stalin’s Russia, his feud with with Solzhenitsyn, the accusations of plagiarism, and the fact he was a loyal communist, a member of the Supreme Soviet and Central Committee, but it is easy to fall in love with the book, its 1940 successor, ‘The Don Flows Home to the Sea,’ and the later Harvest on the Don.' I read them and early in college and ended up majoring in history and minoring in Russian Studies. They deal with the Don Cossacks in the years before, during, and after WW I, the civil war, and into the early Soviet era of forced collectivization, painting a set of vivid images of the Steppes and the rugged society who inhabited them. The Cossacks were a large agrarian society, and most of the story deals with their daily lives and loves. They were horsemen who loyally served generations of Czars and provided them with the best cavalry in the world. Unfortunately, when horse cavalry met the machinegun in WW I, the result wasn’t pretty. They fell in large numbers.
I read these books in paperback many years ago and have been waiting patiently for to bring out a edition, which they finally did a few months ago. With Russian books, that is never easy. With this one, it is nearly impossible. First, ‘And Quiet Flows the Don,’ the later ‘The Don Flows Home to the Sea,’ and even the 1960 ‘Harvest on the Don’ were sometimes published as one book, normally as two, but often chopped up and re-combined, so it is often difficult to figure out what you’ve actually got.

The big downside of this current edition is the horrible non-editing, which is pointed out by many other reviewers. It comes close to ruining the experience, but don’t let it. I hope does not take it down, because it deserves publishing. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of formatting could correct the format errors in a matter of days with Sigil or Calibre. If they would send me an unlocked copy, I’d do it myself, for free. It deserves to be read.

This is not a critique of the novel. It is first rate and ranks with the best of Tolstoy. This is about this particular edition I unfortunately acquired. It is simply, A RIP OFF! It is oversized. Unnecessarily so. The text is actually reprinted from a smaller book. And the text is not actually printed on the paper. It is copied by a Xerox type device. You can actually see the shadows of the page folds in the margins. I'm so disgusted with my copy, I am going to sell it at a used book store for whatever I can get for it,and then go to a Barnes and Noble and buy a more appropriate edition. My recommendation is not to buy this particular edition of the novel. should seriously get another publisher for this item.
I am not a fan of Cossacks. This book's recounting of the village liFe is so thoroughly engaging that all of my former dislike was put aside. The characters are masterfully drawn to tell their individual and collective stories. The prose is so majestic and overcomes all else. It becomes not a story of Cossacks but of villagers in that turn of the 20th century time with all of the truth of human life and some of the gruesome reality of the early part of World War One. Outstanding.
