My husband and I (a US citizen who's just moved to Australia) took a 3 1/2 hour train trip to a little country town north west of Sydney, so I needed something to read. Even though we weren't heading to the true "outback", I did want to read about life in the country. I picked up the Waddi Tree, read 2 chapters and was shocked at my emotional response. I was blown away at how much I fell in love with the way of the land and those that work it and live it.

As you read the synopsis of the book, you'll see that it's a book about real life in the Australian outback. A beautifully written book, Kerry McInnis has you watching Jim grow from child to young man as a jackaroo on a cattle station.

I found this book to be a great insight into the hard, ugly and quite often beautiful life of Austrlian outback living. I found parralells to US cowboys and how the land dominates all actions, thoughts, and views. Kerry McInnis not only captures life in the outback but also captures the emotions and hardships of a young boy growing up.

This book is for someone who enjoys reading a story, but who is also willing to learn about Australian outback life. You'll need an Australian dictionary for some of the words and phrases, but it wouldn't be authentic if you didn't. You'll also need a map as you watch Jim and the rest of the characters travel.

The book will have you turning pages and losing track of time. An addicting read, you won't put down The Waddi Tree.
