In Marty Martins's novel, The Blizzard, readers are taken on a journey that touches on questions of morals and ethics, and the need for parents to learn to communicate with their children. Melanie Hondel is the all-American high school student. She is popular, pretty, and attracts the attention of more than a few boys. One of them is Chet, who Melanie thinks is handsome enough, but whose determined self-reliance she has always found a bit strange and hardly romantic. When Melanie refuses the advances of a classmate, Tommy, and is beaten by him, she flees into a blizzard, where she falls through the ice. Her cries for help are heard by Chet, who is able to save her. They find refuge in an isolated cabin, where they shed their icy clothing and huddle together for warmth…in bed. Rescuers arrive the next day, followed closely by Melanie's father, and there is confusion and anger. Mr. Hondel insists that Chet be arrested and refuses to accept his daughter's explanation, thereby leaving everyone convinced that Chet is dangerous. What ensues is an emotional and very important story about parental expectations, the decisions teenagers and young adults must make that impact their self-respect, their confidence, and their relationships with parents and community. This is a novel about coming of age, romantic love, and the importance of trust.

This booked sucked me in quickly and I couldn’t put it down until I got to the very end! There were unpredictable twists & turns that kept me turning the page until the story ended. I found myself rooting for some characters and despising others. If you’re considering picking up this book, do it. And give yourself a couple of hours because once you start reading, you won’t want to stop! Enjoy!

The Blizzard edition by Marty Martins Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A good book!
Really enjoyed this book. Marty paints the scenes so that you feel as if you are in them. There are time gaps between chapters that you catch on to, which helps the story move forward without getting bogged down in meaningless details. Great story about the vindication of good morals and honest principles.
Once you start “The Blizzard” you won’t be able to put it down. The story is entertaining, informative and has a message that everyone should get. Should be assigned reading for all high school students.
Great book for teens and parents of pre teens and teens. Information at the back of the book stellar. I look forward to the author's next book
I enjoyed reading The Blizzard from cover to cover and when I put it down, I was anxious to continue reading to learn what was going to happen next. The book's main character, Chet, is a true role-model for other teens. He espouses all that is good with respect to family values and doing the right thing. Chet is put into many circumstances where other teens would falter in making the right decision yet he seems to always rely on his moral compass and core values and because of this, invariably seems to persevere amidst the adversity. When reading the book, I caught myself wishing I could have been Chet as a teenager I would have enjoyed living by his sense of adventure, caring and most importantly his sense of courage. This book should be read by all teens as a foundation for establishing what it means to be "good." I hope for a sequel.
Sure, this is a coming of age story with moral lessons and all that, but most of all it's a terrific read. Marty Martins tells a compelling tale, with fully-formed characters, physical and mental challenges and a well drawn plot. While it is "young adult fiction," I -- who have not been a young adult for a bunch of decades -- found it fascinating. It's in no way condescending, preachy or otherwise starchy.
For readers of any age, it's a great story about a couple of kids and their world, their challenges, their eventual success, and shows that no one has a patent on maturity.
Mostly, though, it's just a well-written, intriguing read.
Marty Martins has written an informative book that has a good story line while relaying an important message to parents and young adults regarding date violence. The Blizzard is a young-love story, but its true gift is the portrayal of positive role models with a strong "moral compass".

The story is an important read for parents since it conveys how incorrect assumptions can easily be made, possibly creating life-long consequences. It also shows how parents can be completely unaware of the possibility of their child being involved in an abusive relationship, and how unprepared they are to handle it.

Mr. Martins' background as a career felony prosecutor and District Attorney liaison to law enforcement agencies gives him a unique perspective on this important issue. At the conclusion of his book, Mr. Martins lists websites and hotlines for teens and adults to get information regarding date violence and abusive relationships.
